This guide has been developed to compliment ‘Beyond the View – Canaletto’ - a
landmark exhibition taking place at Tatton Park in 2026. It is intended to be used
during your visit to the Mansion to enhance the experience for young people. It
also provides post visit activity suggestions to help you continue your learning
back at home or in the classroom.

In 1729, Samuel Egerton set off from his home at Tatton Park in Cheshire on a
huge adventure. He was only 18 years old when he travelled more than a
thousand miles by land and sea to start his very first job in Venice, Italy - a city full
of glittering canals, busy markets and amazing art.

Samuel worked for Joseph Smith, an important art dealer who knew many famous artists. This meant Samuel suddenly found himself right in the middle of Venice’s exciting art world. He even met Antonio Giovanni Canal, the brilliant painter we now call ‘Canaletto’, who created some of the most famous views of Venice ever made.

In this exhibition, you’ll discover the fascinating stories and special objects that
once belonged to Samuel and his family. You will learn how the Egertons fell in
love with Italian art and culture and how this helped shape Tatton Park for
generations.

Get ready to step into Samuel’s world and explore ‘Beyond the View’…
