Here are 144 alternative words to 'said' to encourage children to think about how their character is speaking and/or and inferred meaning, etc.
I've created them in three different colours so that they can be split and displayed or mixed together.
I put them across my classroom like a long intertwining snake, kind of like a long plait. I then tell the children that they can only choose from one colour, two colours or all of the three colours.
I sometimes let one of the children choose which colour!
