Always & Tampax ‘About You’ Puberty Education programme is back for another year! Designed to support schools and teachers tackling the challenge of talking about puberty with 11-12 year olds, we have a wealth of free resources and classroom demo kits with subject links to PSHE and Health & Wellbeing.

Have a go with this taster activity and topic map that gives you an overview of the full resource and help pupils learn about the physical changes that happen to their bodies, both inside and out.

For more information on the full resource and to register for a free kit (for teachers to demonstrate how pads and tampons work in practice through the aid of blue liquid and samples of feminine protection products (1x pads demo kit + demo guide; 1x tampons demo kit + demo guide) visit: https://nationalschoolspartnership.com/initiatives/always-about-you/

The full suite of resources include three core modules: Changing Body, Healthy Body and Emotional Health. Each module has been designed with links to Science and PSHE. The secondary resources build on the core modules and new to this year, introduce a PE module.

Further resources include Teacher notes with national curriculum links, lesson plans, supporting PowerPoints, activity sheets and videos.

Module overviews:
Healthy Body (Science and PSHE)
In this module students will learn how to properly care for their changing bodies, both inside and out. This includes diet, exercise, personal hygiene and sleep.

Emotional Health (PSHE)
This module addresses emotional changes caused by puberty, gives advice about peer pressure, self-esteem and relationships with parents/carers and draws on the #LikeAGirl campaign developed to help teens build their confidence and to empower them to live to their fullest potential.

Changing Body (Science)
This module gives your students straight answers to their biggest questions about puberty, growth and development. It includes a video to show changes associated with puberty, the female reproductive organs and what’s occurring inside the body during the menstrual cycle.

Secondary PE module (PE)
This module is designed to tackle the sport drop-off in girls at the point of puberty. This leverages the #LikeAGirl campaign helping them to build their confidence, understand that they can still be active and encourage them to live to their fullest potential.

I am currently mid way through this topic with my year 7 class and they are making immense progress. Many, including the girls, are unaware of changes to their bodies during puberty and therefore are ill prepared for what to expect. I have used the sample packs to aid my teaching recently and all students found it engaging and informative. By the end of both the tampax and always demonstrations all students had made progress. I felt the demonstration cleared up a lot of anxiety regarding leakages and how to use the products. I would not want to teach this particular lesson without these resources. They are a great visual aid for students who may not have seen these items before. With regard to the free samples, all female students were given the opportunity to take one, and all did. This shows how important and useful they found them. Laura (science teacher)

Excellent resource which we use on a PSHE Staying Safe for Christmas Day to teach students. Always were extremely accommodating in getting the packs to us in time. I would recommend to anyone! Hannah (Head of Citizenship)
