Introduction to circular motion and orbits including satellites. It’s a relatively straightforward semi-didactic lesson designed to get through the materials quickly. I would recommend swinging some golf balls around, a bucket of water over your head, and spinning a sparkler in a drill to lighten this up a little bit.

Having said that, the theory is all there (I think - please correct me if I’m wrong) and I’ve put together some exam style questions that cover the slide contents.

Topics covered:

  • how to get into orbit
  • defining centripetal force as a resultant force
  • some examples
  • Relationship between satellite height and speed including why
  • Some basic orbit descriptions
  • Orbital speed calculation
  • Factors affecting magnitude of centripetal force

As an aside - I can’t remember whether I wrote the slides about kicking dogs or not - I’ve had them for a while so if they are someone else’s then thanks and feel free to claim credit!

I hope this helps - please let me know if you would suggest any improvements.

Thanks!

Awesome work - saved me a lot of time. I may buy a polystyrene dog for demonstrations....

Man, this was awesome. All I added were some animated paths and dog barks, growls and howls...and now I can't stop laughing. Also simplified some of the slides for my ESL learners, but this is just amazing on its own. Great work!

I don't often leave reviews but boy this is good - one of the best presentations of a potentially difficult and dry topic - I love the ideas to lighten this up a bit. Thanks you so much
