A complete lesson covering sections 4.1.1.1 and 4.1.1.2 of the AQA Combined Science specification, focusing on eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells and plant and animal cells.
The lesson begins with a KS3 retrieval starter to activate prior knowledge of basic cell structure. Students then move on to labelling plant and animal cells, supported by an included worksheet.
Next, the lesson introduces the key differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, before students label a bacterial cell and complete a comparison table summarising the similarities and differences between the two cell types.
The final activity is an extended‑response style question, allowing students to explain the differences between the cells and how these support survival.
The plenary brings students back to the original learning question, giving them the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned.
