This unit has both geographical and historical approaches explaining why the elephants of Sri Lanka are on the "endangered" list. The conflicts between wild elephant and human land uses are highlighted. Both sides of the conflict are indicated by stories and news reports. The creation of Nature Reserves and Captive Breeding Centres are shown as one strategy to recover elephant numbers. This unit could also be used as background/introductory material for Senior Geography in topics of sustainability, land cover change and bio-diversity loss.
