Basic introduction to competition aimed at year 8. Assumes a basic understanding of variation from the previous lesson and starts with a whole class starter on continuous or discontinuous variation (could use as discussion basis, whiteboard AfL, voting, etc.).

Competition introduced using a game where pupils pick 6 characteristics for a mythical creature (lower sets could draw their creature). Their creatures then have to survive 6 years with various challenges to their survival. Survivors win the game (usually 2 or 3 in a class of 30 manage this).

Next is a basic (short) "what are the animals competing for?" quiz.

Finally, the decline of the red squirrel is used as a case study to introduce the idea of selection (which was my next lesson). Final activity involves Darwins Finches for pupils to decide which finch will survive (basic intro as prep for next lesson).
