Pupils have to study the picture for 5 minutes without writing anything down.
Then they have to write down what is happening in the picture. How does the subject of the painting feel? What was the subject doing at the time of the painting? How does it make the viewer feel? Anything else that the wish to comment on.
Pupils should then be divided into groups to discuss their findings and be prepared to share them with the class at the end of the lesson.
