This set of three lessons invite children and young people to explore empathy, identity, peace and belonging. They lead to children creating a simple self
self-portrait and a message of friendship to “a friend I haven’t met yet".
The lessons link to a trans-local project known as ‘Drawing Hope’ which began in South Korea where during the cold war children in South Korea were encouraged to draw pictures of North Korean children as devils. South Korean organisation ‘Okedongmu’ sought change and started asking children to draw a self portrait and a message of greeting to a ‘friend I have not met yet’ in North Korea. Following an exhibition of these artworks, the initiative facilitated a historic visit of South Korean children to Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea.
Since then, the project has grown internationally, with children from around the world contributing portraits that have been displayed in places including Northern Ireland, South Africa, and the UN Headquarters in New York. These exhibitions invite children and adults alike to rethink the social, political, and economic lines that divide us.

A meaningful and creative resource celebrating identity, diversity and peace Drawing Hope is a great resource for exploring identity, celebrating difference and promoting peace, unity and understanding. The activities gave children an opportunity to reflect on who they are, what makes them unique and the things that are important to them. They provide a great opportunity for children to explore how identities are shaped by both inner qualities such as beliefs and interests, as well as outward appearance and inherited physical features. The resource stimulated thoughtful discussions about individuality, similarities and differences, and helped children to consider a greater appreciation and respect for others. It also has scope to provide opportunities to connect with different communities, celebrate diversity and explore how we can all contribute towards a more peaceful, inclusive and united world which is very much needed in the world in which we live today. The lesson plans were well thought out, engaging, creative and easy to follow. The clear guidance and practical activities enabled the opportunity of producing high-quality outcomes and children the opportunities to develop their meaning of self and others and express their values. Dream and identities visually celebrating what makes each of us different but at the same time the same. A great project, a really worthwhile resource which has the scope to extend beyond the confines of the classroom. It goes beyond art and creativity, encouraging meaningful conversations about belonging, acceptance, equality and the importance of standing together. Highly recommended!
A great project for looking at identity; how it feels internally and how it presents externally. The children enjoyed deciding on the things that were important to them, as well as celebrating physical features that were inherited. Making links with children from different communities and celebrating diversity, was our main drive for using this resource. Lesson plans were comprehensive and fun. The guidance ensured good quality portraits.
