An Inspector Calls: Eva Smith’s Unseen Voice & Downfall (Empathy & Analysis)

Eva Smith is the powerful, unseen protagonist of J.B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls, a character whom students must track through her multiple identities: Eva Smith, Daisy Renton, and the pregnant woman referred to by Mrs Birling.

This highly popular, active learning resource takes students beyond passive reading and into the heart of the play’s moral drama. Students are challenged to step into Eva’s shoes and write the unspoken monologue she would deliver to each of the Birling family members and Gerald Croft after their cruel actions contributed to her tragic downfall.

This unique task promotes deep engagement and requires students to analyse:

Social Responsibility: How each character’s selfish action links to a wider moral message.

Empathy and Perspective: The devastating real-world impact of the Birling family’s privilege.

Dramatic Structure: The chronological sequence of events that builds the narrative of the play.

Priestley’s Intent: The political purpose behind giving the working-class victim a powerful, if unheard, voice.

An excellent, high-impact lesson for exploring class, morality, and character motivation, ideal for GCSE exam preparation.
