A diamond 9 showing different jobs that allow pupils to discuss the factors that can affect how much people are paid.
Suggested way to use this resource:
- Print one copy for each pair of pupils
- Trim along lines to create a set of 9 diamonds for each pair
- Have pupils rank the jobs depicted on the diamonds according to criteria such as: PAY, HOURS, RESPONSIBILITY/PRESSURE
Prompt pupils to think about how pay is only ONE consideration when choosing a job, with questions such as . . .
“Which job do you think is the least stressful? Why?”
“Which jobs take a lot of training/experience? How does this link to pay?”
“If you want a job that pays more, what sacrifices might you have to make?”
NOTE: we wouldn’t recommend giving or asking pupils to suggest specific pounds-and-pence figures for salaries as this could lead onto discussion/comparisons of parents’/teachers’ jobs and pay levels, which would not be appropriate.
