Lesson 4: Why Were Coal and Iron So Important?

A clear and engaging KS3 History lesson exploring how coal and iron powered Britain’s Industrial Revolution and economic growth. Students investigate why these natural resources were essential for transforming industry, transport, and production during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Through guided reading, source analysis, and structured enquiry, pupils examine how Britain moved from relying on water, wood, and human labour to using coal as a powerful and reliable energy source. Students explore why coal was known as “black gold”, how it powered steam engines, and how this allowed factories to grow and operate more efficiently across the country.

Students also investigate the importance of iron and steel, analysing how they were used to build machines, railways, bridges, and tools. Through the story of the Darby family, pupils understand how new methods of iron production, such as using coke instead of charcoal, made iron cheaper and easier to produce, supporting rapid industrial expansion.

Using data interpretation and graphical skills, students examine how coal production increased over time and explain why demand for coal and iron grew alongside industrialisation. The lesson concludes with a structured analytical writing task where students evaluate why coal and iron were so important to Britain’s industrial success.
