This challenging literary techniques assessment is designed for senior cycle students revising foundational English skills. It assesses students’ understanding of key techniques introduced in earlier years and is ideal for 6th Year revision, consolidation, or diagnostic assessment.

The test draws on the concepts taught in the Literary Skills Series: Foundations I and Foundations II, covering both core literary techniques and narrative devices. Students are required to identify techniques, analyse their effects, and explain how writers use them, helping bridge early learning with Leaving Certificate analytical skills.

The assessment includes four structured sections:
• Section A – Identify the Technique
• Section B – Explain the Effect
• Section C – Identify and Analyse
• Section D – Short Written Responses

Students engage with techniques such as simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, imagery, symbolism, tone, mood, foreshadowing, juxtaposition, alliteration, and onomatopoeia, demonstrating both recognition and deeper understanding.

The included answer key makes this resource quick and easy to correct, while the question design encourages students to move beyond simple identification towards explanation and interpretation.
