KS4 resource used effectively with a Yr.10 class. Uses a stage direction rather than a direct quote to highlight an alternative to quoting direct speech.

Example exploits one of the major themes of the play; that of creating drama, or tension. Constructive criticism, suggestions always welcomed as to future improvements.

This lesson hinges on the idea of analysis of a stage instruction "desolate /deserted place", which though important to a reader, was an instruction unknown to a Shakespearean audience, because they were watching a bare stage. The intrigue comes from thunder and lightning, effects which were made on the Jacobean stage and had a great impact as the lesson does suggest.
