Loot boxes and gambling lesson (UKS2)

A Y5/Y6 PSHE lesson on gambling and loot boxes for Y5–Y6. ‘The house always wins’, and the character of Alex finds out the hard way.

The lesson opens with a simple dice game that lets pupils feel the pull of a near-win before the concept of gambling is introduced. From there, they build a clear understanding of what gambling is, why “the house always wins,” and how loot boxes in video games use the same psychological mechanics: excitement, randomness, and the hope of a big prize, all to keep players spending real money.

Alex’s story runs through the lesson as a worked example: a teenager who spends his paper round money on loot boxes chasing a big prize, but who ends up using his mum’s bank card without asking, and has to reckon with guilt, regret, and the realisation that the game was never really fair. Pupils analyse the negative loop that kept him spending, identify healthy versus risky gaming habits, and consider what advice they would give Alex at each stage of his story.

As gambling is a sensitive topic, and one that is forbidden in some religions and cultures, it is worth establishing some ground rules before the lesson begins.
