Macbeth: Grade 4–9 AO2 Quote Analysis. 6 Essential Quotes

Designed by an experienced Head of English with extensive knowledge of the AQA GCSE English Literature specification, this resource helps students develop sophisticated AO2 analysis through six carefully selected quotations from Macbeth. While written with AQA Paper 1 and its assessment objectives in mind, the analytical skills developed are equally applicable to all major GCSE English Literature exam boards.

Rather than simply memorising quotations, students are guided through a structured four-step analysis process: Notice, Unpick, Explore and Connect. This encourages progression from secure Grade 4 responses to perceptive Grade 7+ analysis by developing close language analysis, exploring connotations and alternative interpretations, and linking ideas to Shakespeare’s wider message across the play.

The six quotations have been carefully selected because they unlock the key characters, themes and ideas needed to answer the vast majority of GCSE examination questions.

Resource includes:

Six essential quotations from Macbeth.
Key themes linked to every quotation.
Scaffolded AO2 analysis tasks progressing from Grade 4 to Grade 7+.
A student-friendly AO2 Analysis Formula (Notice, Unpick, Explore, Connect).
An AO2 self-assessment checklist to improve analytical writing.

Ideal for:

GCSE English Literature revision.
Year 10 and Year 11 lessons.
Retrieval practice and revision sessions.
Homework and independent study.
Intervention and exam preparation.
Developing higher-level AO2 analysis.

Written for: AQA GCSE English Literature (Paper 1), but fully compatible with Edexcel, OCR, WJEC/Eduqas and other GCSE English Literature specifications.
