Oliver Gunn, a weaver's apprentice, was the first victim of the plague in Stratford-upon-Avon. He died and was buried on 11 July 1564. In the Burials Register, next to this entry, John Brechtgirdle, the Vicar of Holy Trinity Church, wrote 'Hic incepit pestis' &' 'The plague starts here'. During the next few months the number of deaths from plague increased. September was by far the worst month.
