This full lesson PowerPoint (with suggested practical tasks and worksheet) will allow you to teach a broad range of abilities about how to focus a microscope, why they are important and how to calculate magnification. This focuses on the theory and basic operation of microscopes, my follow-up lesson on “Microscopes and Making Slides” gives further practical exploration.

This lesson is in keeping with the current KS3 UK National Curriculum, is easily accessible for students and simple to follow for teachers.

This is one of several lessons that I offer for free so users can sample my work before deciding to pay for further resources. The other free lessons that I offer are detailed in the attached document “Year 7 Science lessons checklist”. Thank you for this lesson, I find your resources really easy to just pick up and run with. Microscope practicals often descend into choas when the students are unable to find an image, so I was really pleased to see that you have set time aside to learn exactly HOW to focus in the first place. I'll look forward to delivering this in class.
