A practical investigation based on the reason that the British add milk to their tea.

Is it best to add the milk before or after pouring the hot tea into your cup?

Remember that you are responsible for producing a risk assessment for the activity and the class that will undertake the activity.

Depending upon the ability and maturity of the class that will conduct the experiment, then I would consider:

  1. Using heat resistant beakers rather than china cups. Resistance to breakage and convenient volume markings might make life easier.
  2. Using water baths at preset temperatures - the water does not need to be boiling. However the observable effect will be greater with just boiled water or will it? The activity is open to modification.
  3. Use data loggers/projectors should the activity be used as a demonstration.
  4. Trial the experiment beforehand and modify as necessary.
  5. I have provided a simple reporting tool but again this can be modified depending on your class and time availability.

Have fun!
