Can your students solve the mystery of the missing microscope slide before time runs out?

Bring excitement, teamwork and problem-solving into your science classroom with this FREE 20-minute Science Escape Room!

A mysterious microscope slide has disappeared from the school laboratory. The evidence is locked inside a secure specimen cabinet, protected by three coded locks.

Students must use their scientific knowledge, reasoning and mathematical skills to solve the puzzles, crack the codes and recover the missing specimen.

Perfect for:

  • KS3 Science lessons (Years 7–9)
  • GCSE Biology revision and knowledge recall
  • Science enrichment activities
  • End-of-topic challenges
  • Team-building and problem-solving
  • Science clubs and STEM activities
  • Engaging lesson activities and end-of-term sessions

No laboratory equipment required! This is a fully printable, paper-based escape room that can be completed in pairs or small groups.

All three puzzles have matching teacher solutions, making the activity straightforward to deliver with minimal preparation.

Three Science Puzzles. Three Locks. One Mystery.

Students work through three interconnected challenges to unlock the specimen cabinet.

Lock 1 – The Specimen Files

Biology: Cell Structure and Identification

Students interpret clues about three mystery specimens to identify the correct cell types.

They explore:

  • Plant and animal cell structures
  • Chloroplasts and photosynthesis
  • Cell walls, membranes and nuclei
  • Onion epidermis, cheek cells and pondweed

Correct identifications reveal the first three-digit code.

Lock 2 – The Magnification Vault

Biology and Maths: Microscopy Calculations

Students apply scientific calculations to unlock the second code.

Challenges include:

  • Total microscope magnification
  • Image size and actual size
  • Converting millimetres to micrometres
  • Interpreting numerical answers to identify code digits

A useful activity for developing scientific numeracy and practising essential microscopy skills.

Lock 3 – The Shuffled Method

Working Scientifically: Preparing Microscope Slides

Students reconstruct a six-step method for preparing and viewing a stained onion-skin specimen.

They must correctly sequence:

  • Preparing the microscope slide
  • Positioning the specimen
  • Adding iodine stain
  • Lowering the coverslip
  • Selecting the correct magnification
  • Focusing the microscope

The correctly ordered instructions reveal the final code.

The Final Challenge

Teams combine their three codes into one nine-digit cabinet access code to reveal the missing specimen!

An optional bonus challenge encourages students to explain their identification using scientific evidence.
