This book is suitable for advanced readers in year 5 or 6, or average readers in year 7 or 8. It’s a classic of Edwardian-era children’s literature and offers possible cross-curricular links to history. A good introduction to early 20th century writing, perhaps before starting on 19th century writers.
There are a few questions on each chapter, which should encourage students to pay attention to characters’ motivation, some language features, the social context, etc.

This was an excellent resource to get my students involved in reading The Railway Children! The inference questions are precisely worded and give great opportunity for discussions among the students.
During lockdown, my daughter (Year 4) and her friends have been reading a chapter of the book per week and then discussing it via Zoom using your questions. It has been brilliant. It is a tough text for little ones in a strange learning environment and these questions have made a big difference. Thank you.
This was brilliant pliant for my upper year 4 class
