This three-lesson mini scheme of work examines the church, Henry II, and the murder of Thomas Becket. It provides an excellent introduction to the theme of church versus crown and the contextual knowledge needed for later studies on the English Reformation and other “power” issues faced by the English monarchy.
It works effectively as a standalone mini SOW but can also be integrated into the free-to-play History game world at Wolsey Academy for a highly interactive experience.
Each lesson includes:
Literacy and numeracy starter activity
Teacher narrative context pages – a chance for storytelling and scene setting
Plenaries
A range of active learning episodes
EAL and literacy support mats
The three lessons, along with their main activities, are as follows:
Church & Crown – Graphic-based church mind map discussions, source question, leaflet production, “Consult the Codex” activity (this resource)
Henry II – Timeline questions, round room source activity, Henry poster activity, “Consult the Codex” activity
Becket – Chronology card sort, “Consult the Codex” activity, descriptive writing activity, cartoon strip creation
This resource works best when students are also playing the free Becket game and completing the Codex alongside the lessons – ideal for ongoing homework or ICT-based lessons.
All profits from this resource support charitable initiatives, including refugee assistance, youth sports, educational programmes, and environmental carbon capture, making our work carbon negative.
