Set 2 Sounds Decodable Reading Comprehension – 12 Stories with Questions (Dyslexia Friendly)

Give children a real reading win with 12 short stories they can decode on their own.

This set has one story for each Set 2 sound, in teaching order: ay, ee, igh, ow, oo (zoo), oo (look), ar, or, air, ir, ou and oy. Every story only uses Set 1 sounds, the Set 2 sounds taught so far, and a small number of common red words. Children never meet a word they haven’t been taught to read, so they can focus on blending, fluency and understanding.

What’s included (13 A4 pages, PDF):

12 story pages, each with:
the focus sound shown clearly, with three example words to practise first
a short, funny story in short paragraphs, such as a baboon with a spoon, a dog called Sparks who runs off in the dark, and a storm that knocks a branch onto the porch
three tick-box comprehension questions with decodable answers, in mixed order so children have to read carefully
A teacher page with a simple routine for using the set, the red words to pre-teach, and a full answer key for all 36 questions.

Designed for every reader:

Andika font, made for early readers, with the single-storey a and g children learn to write
large text, wide line and word spacing, and a cream background, following dyslexia-friendly guidance
left-aligned text with no italics, and each sentence on its own line
a name line on every page for easy marking

Perfect for:

phonics groups and catch-up interventions
EAL learners, who can build vocabulary and reading confidence together
guided reading, home reading and homework
quick assessment to check that each Set 2 sound is secure

How to use it:

Practise the focus sound and the three example words.
Pre-teach the red words.
Children read the story twice: once to decode, once for fluency.
They read each question aloud and tick the answer.

Each story takes about 10 minutes, so it fits easily into a phonics session or intervention slot.

Made by EAL resources by Maryam. Every word has been chosen and checked by hand to match children’s phonics stage.
