KS2 reading comprehension on online scams and phishing. Teaches pupils to spot fake texts, dodgy links and ‘too good to be true’ offers — answer key included.

Nearly half of 8–17s in the UK have already been scammed online (UK Safer Internet Centre, 2025). This ready-to-teach resource builds the critical-thinking skills pupils need to recognise fraud, wrapped in an engaging short story.

This activity is one of hundreds of resources on the Tykeoons primary financial education platform.

Curriculum links: English (reading comprehension), PSHE/RSHE, Computing & online safety, and financial education — one resource, four boxes ticked.

What’s included:

  • An original illustrated story, ‘Too Good to Be True’, following Zia as she outsmarts a phishing text
  • Pre-taught vocabulary (phishing, fraudster) to support access for all
  • 6 sequenced questions targeting key reading skills: retrieval, vocabulary, inference, sequencing, explanation and evaluation
  • A higher-order extension task for early finishers — pupils design their own scam and identify the giveaways
  • A full teacher answer key, with model answers
