Self-advocacy boards are collections of symbols or pictures that
help a child or young person communicate when they are unable to
express their needs with words. When children or young people feel
overwhelmed, or have speech and language challenges, pointing to
a symbol or picture can be easier than talking.

Self-advocacy boards can help children and young people to:
• communicate if something is wrong
• ask for what they need
• have a sense of autonomy.

Self-advocacy boards are easy to use. The child or young person
simply points to the symbols or pictures that match what they want
to communicate. They may, or may not, also talk at the same time.
