Help pupils take control of how sentences begin using the STARS approach to sentence openings.
This resource is based on the Sentence Stackers approach to writing, developed by Emma Snow.

It helps pupils make deliberate choices about how sentences begin, shaping clarity, meaning and impact. Instead of relying on formulaic sentence starters, pupils learn to shape meaning through choice.

What Is Included

Presentation slides (ready to use) introducing each STARS sentence type
A structured worksheet using a story spine that pupils improve and develop
A STARS Starter Map to support idea generation where needed
A flexible teaching guide showing how the resource can be used in different ways
Clear grammar links showing how each sentence type works in practice

How It Can Be Used

As a short, focused writing task
As a full lesson on sentence openings
As part of a longer writing sequence
As an ongoing tool within regular writing lessons

What Makes This Different

This resource moves beyond simple sentence starter prompts.

Instead of encouraging pupils to add features, it helps them:

choose how a sentence begins
understand the effect of that choice
develop control over their writing

Age Range

Suitable for Years 4-8
Can be adapted for older pupils as a foundation for more advanced sentence work.
