Sight words are words a reader recognizes instantly from memory, while phonics is a method of decoding words by their letter-sound relationships. The key phonetic difference is that many common sight words are phonetically irregular and cannot be sounded out using standard phonics rules, requiring them to be memorized by sight instead.
