Made for Year 3/4.
Used at the beginning of the year to help build up vocabulary and understanding of appropriate similes.

Notebook
Discusses similes from Chapter 1 of The Iron Man
Explains to children that the similes used give them a picture in their heads to help them really understand what the author wants to describe. Also allows the author to make things sound more interesting and keep the reader hooked.
Discusses the point that not all sentences with the words as or like in them are similes.
Last couple of slides then lead into the mix and match activity.

Mix and match
Year 3 whole class used this with some writing their own examples when finished.
Year 4 LA used this.

This activity was on the back of what similes were and where they could be used.

Vocabulary was discussed.
Children then had to justify why they had matched each beginning and ending. This discussion proved very useful as it allowed children to see how and why each ending was used and that there was only one real option that worked for each sentence.

Simile description picture
Children either used their own similes or used the ones from the mix and match sheet.
