This is a plan and the resources needed for two cross-curricular lessons, planning and creating a Stone Age pendant and map. It is based on the shale pendant found at the archaeological excavations at Star Carr in Yorkshire.
The resources use material from the book Vlad and the Stone Age, which is a story based on the latest finds and research on Mesolithic Britain.
The lessons cover discussing the historical artefact, geographical vocabulary describing Stone Age Britain and creating a map using symbols found on Stone Age objects consistently discovered across Europe.
At the end of the lessons, pupils will have created their own map out of clay, having assigned meaning to the symbols. They will have discussed what we know about this pendant and why Stone Age people might have needed it.
