Diane Rich from the Early Years Workshop team visits Astwood Bank First School in Redditch, to see how play is incorporated into an average morning in reception class. Headteacher, Chris Rider, and reception class teacher, Jo Haynes, place a high importance on allowing children to develop their own stories through their play.

With a storybook starting point, the children are then free to play in the role-play area, puppet theatre, science lab or outdoors with the dressing up box.

All primary school teachers should spend some time watching this video. They might relate to the misunderstanding of the real value of play in children's learning. I particulary liked the head teacher's embracing approach.

Great video and I especially loved that children could explore through play death. In so many nursery schools death is something that is swept under the carpet instead of being explored. I look forward to the next installment.
