The Gradual Elephant Literacy Unit

This is a sample chapter from 'The Gradual Elephant' by H. S. Toshack, together with its Strategies-based literacy tasks. It is designed to be used as a stand-alone resource (children don’t need to have read the book), demonstrating how the reading of a novel in class can be supplemented, and the experience deepened for children, by the use of carefully-constructed and challenging questions taking readers further into the text, on a page-by-page and then a whole-chapter basis.
