Lit in Colour Book List for Early Years (EYFS) – Diverse Reading Recommendations

Discover the first Lit in Colour (incomplete) book list curated specifically for Early Years and Foundation Stage (EYFS). Created in collaboration with Early Years Consultant and children’s author Jamel C Campbell, this resource highlights a vibrant selection of books by writers of colour—perfect for introducing diversity and inclusion into storytime for young children.

This book list is intentionally called “incomplete,” acknowledging the ever-evolving landscape of children’s literature and the wealth of outstanding books by writers of colour being published each year. Instead of being exhaustive, the list offers a snapshot of exciting new releases alongside beloved classics, giving teachers, educators, and parents a practical starting point to diversify reading materials for the youngest learners.

Developed in response to feedback from primary and nursery educators as well as parents, this EYFS Lit in Colour book list is designed to

  • Encourage creativity, imagination, and cultural awareness in young children

  • Support educators and teachers in discovering high-quality literature by writers of colour

  • Build confidence in selecting inclusive texts that reflect the diverse experiences and backgrounds of all children

  • Browse the curated titles to find stories that will spark imagination, celebrate uniqueness, and nurture a lifelong love of reading from the very start of a child’s educational journey.
