The Émigrée

This resource supports KS 3-4 multilingual learners who are new to English as they read, comprehend and analyse the poem, The Émigrée. Part 1 includes activities that build concepts before reading and Part 2 includes activities that support comprehension and analysis during reading.

Part 1 includes ‘before’ reading activities to help build up complex concepts that students will later encounter as they read the poem. Activities include a role play, connections to learners’ own lives and collaborative activities around visuals and vocabulary development.

Part 2 includes ‘during’ reading activities to support comprehension and analysis of the poem. A scaffolded reading resource provides visuals and an interpretation of the poem in comprehensible English for each line. A visual list of vocabulary is included as well as a collaborative group activity that has students identify and interpret personifications found within the poem.
