The giant panda is one of the best loved animals. The Chines regard their pandas as national treasures. They come in great numbers to the Panda Research Centre on the outskirts of Chengdu City to look down into one of the panda enclosures, wave and take photos of their pandas. The pandas sit around, chewing their favourite bamboo bamboo stalk and seem oblivious to the attention. They are also oblivious to the fact that they are endangered. This stand alone unit will take you into the Panda Research area to see pandas large and less large. It can be used as an interest unit in primary levels and as a learning resource at secondary levels. The attached pages are provided in black and white and colour forms (PDF) for you to provide copies for class distribution. Find out why pandas are endangered and discover what is being done to protect and hopefully save them from a further decline in numbers. This unit supports ideas of sustainability.
