A CRO (cathode ray oscilloscope) can be used to measure potential differences, and to see how they vary. This makes a good introduction to the oscilloscope. But, today, one would use a digital voltmeter for any serious measurements.

Useful video in the experimental write up explaining how to use the CRO. I don't use it much, but it is useful in certain instances to show the difference between AC and DC, and some specifications expect students to be able to draw oscilloscope traces, so seeing what one is useful.
