WHO WAS LINCOLN??
Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States from 1861 to 1865.
He presided over the break up and reunification of the country.
He was assassinated shortly after this.
He was greatly revered for most of the time after that.
While it required a war to bring the break away states back
into the Union, Lincoln did so with skill and political savvy.
He negotiated the difficult requirement to follow the Constitution
and satisfy the need to free the slaves in the South.
While a satisfactory solution to the slavery issue should have been
possible, the Southerners were unreasonable and arrogant.
They attacked a northern fort and declared independence.
Great destruction of the South was sustained with 600,000 total
casualties. While dwarfed by later wars, the American Civil War
was horrible. The North’s strategy was to blockade the South which
had little industry and population resources. The North also had to
keep European powers out of the war.
While the South had some flashy victories in the East, the blockade
became effective and a slow steady invasion of the South was carried out.
Texas was separated when the Mississippi river was controlled. The North
penetrated into the South’s homeland and destroyed their means to continue the war. They realized they had to capture Lee the South’s main general and his army - which they did.
The industrial might of the North was proven and the slaves were liberated.
