Author tips: Getting started on Facebook

Amy Willson, of WillsonEducation, is a geography teacher and Author on TES. Here, she writes about her resources Facebook page to inspire authors who are considering stepping into the social media-fold.

Why I use Facebook

Amongst the other projects I run alongside TES Resources, I use my Facebook page to promote my resources, to help give advice on creating resources and to share quick ideas for things which don’t quite warrant an entire lesson plan of their own; such as ideas to keep students busy during registration. I also like to inject a little humour with my posts through images I find. Being on Facebook has also given me the opportunity to join and share other teaching related groups. I started out by researching my interests, such as National Geographic, and gradually built on this by joining more groups recommended by my peers.

How I started out

Having a tutor group, I often struggled to find interesting tasks that would take twenty minutes and the students would enjoy. To overcome this, I cobbled together a list of important dates during term time to help me with ideas; these included national days, charity days, awareness days and some comical days, such as Limerick Day (12th May).

I had heard friends and colleagues say that they had struggled with tutor group ideas too. So I decided to share these dates and some suggestions on my Facebook page, and I’ve also since turned this into a resource.

Managing my page

On average, I like to update the page two or three times a week. From time to time, I upload images or news content which isn’t directly related to my resources but is topical or relevant to the subject to generate interest in my page. I create information and resources related to upcoming events and keep my content relevant. This helps me to share timely images and topics on my Facebook page, as well as using them in lesson plans and schemes of work, which I then also share on my page.

My Facebook page is where I advertise my TES resources when they are available and I publish my resources in ‘topic bundles’ at appropriate times, for example, revision resources in the lead up to GCSE exams.

In short

  1. Images are good to draw people to your page – funny ones help!
  2. Groups are a good and interesting way to keep on top of your subject knowledge.
  3. You don’t need to update your page all the time, a handful of posts a week works well.
  4. Use your posts to highlight when you’ve shared new resources.
  5. Think about the timing of your posts and what’s teachers are looking for – FB is a great way to promote your relevant resources at a certain time of year or in relation to an event.
