## Introduction to multiplication and division

• Year group: Year 1
• Term: Summer
• Topic: Multiplication and division
• Duration: 3 weeks
• Keystage: KS1
• Age Range: 5 to 6 yrs
• Unit can be taught out of sequence: N
• Week Range: 1 - 3

In this chapter, pupils focus on equal grouping and sharing, and represent situations involving multiplication and division.

At this early stage, pupils do not write formal statements using multiplication and division signs. Instead, they develop familiarity with different contexts for each concept. They use a variety of concrete objects and pictorial representations to do this, with a particular focus on arrays.

## Resources for this topic

### White Rose Maths

#### Introduction to multiplication

This resource gets children to start thinking about grouping and equal and unequal groups.

#### Reasoning - Problem Solving - Number (KS1) and Fractions (KS2) - March 4th

Today's problems are ones that involve multiplication in KS1 and fractions in KS2.

In the KS1 problem students have to find the values that a symbol represents and in the second question has to find four different ways of writing the same calculation.

At KS2 the questions are on fractions..

Every day in March the White Rose Maths Hub is aiming to put out a question of the day.

Tweet us @WRMathsHub a picture of your children's answers for a chance to win a prize.

#### Reasoning - Problem Solving - Mainly Number Problems - March 23rd

Today's problems are here. There are two problems for KS1 and three for KS2.

In KS1 children have to work out the total number of oranges and also understand the relationship between repeated addition and multiplication.

At KS2 children have three quick number problems they have to solve.

Every day in March the White Rose Maths Hub is aiming to put out a question of the day.

Enabling teachers to continuously develop their practice is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery Programme.

This CPD video provides step-by-step guidance on introduction to multiplication and division.

Our videos aim to:

• Model teaching tips, techniques and clarify how to make connections between concrete, pictorial and abstract representations
• Support the teaching of different methods and concepts, rather than focusing on one method only
• Enhance subject knowledge and support non-specialists

#### Introduction to multiplication and division

Encouraging pupils to calculate flexibly is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

This practical teaching guide helps you develop your pupils to apply their number sense when problem-solving and make connections between calculation strategies.

This guide exemplifies a teaching approach for introduction to multiplication and division.

• The CPA approach should be incorporated to support pupils in making connections between calculation strategies
• Teachers can use this guidance to encourage flexible mathematical thinking

#### Division Investigation

A simple division investigation that asks pupils to show what happens when you divide.
Pupils make whole squares to represent dividing by 4. You will need to make the link to the calculation explicit. Pupils will hopefully be able to see from the investigation what it means to make the whole and what the remain represents.

Pupils can then start to reason why the remainder can never big bigger than what you are dividing by. They also look for a pattern in the remainder too.

#### Three Times Table

This worksheet is part of our November resources competition. The worksheet checks understanding of the 3 times table in numerous different ways,

Remember to submit your own resource for your chance to win a prize in our November resource competition. More details can be found here.
