## Introduction to weight (or mass)

• Year group: Year 1
• Term: Spring
• Topic: Length, weight and volume

In this chapter, pupils meet the concept of weight (or mass) as a measurement. They use the terms “weight” and “mass” interchangeably.

Once again, pupils are introduced to the concept through real-life, relatable examples and should be encouraged to handle different objects to get a feel for and an understanding of what is meant by weight (or mass).

Pupils will compare, describe and solve practical problems for weight (or mass). They use language such as “heavy”, “light”, “heavier than” and “lighter than” and make statements such as, “The tennis ball is heavier than the feather”.

Additionally, pupils measure and record weight (or mass) using both non-standard and standard measuring equipment. For example, they use balance scales to determine the weight of an object in cubes.

#### Reasoning - Problem Solving - Number (KS1) & Fractions and Percentages (KS2) - March 15th

There are two problems for KS1 and three for KS2.

In KS1 children have to work out what prizes can be claimed for a certain number of tokens. They then have to use reasoning to work out the value of a particular object.

At KS2 children solve problems using fractions and percentages. Q3 requires a little more thought and children may benefit from using a bar model or other diagram to help them solve it.

Deepening pupils’ understanding of key mathematical ideas is a core element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

Our Key Constructs highlight the essential mathematical concepts all pupils are expected to grasp within each year group, with accompanying guidance for assessing pupil progress.

Our Key Constructs are closely aligned to the National Curriculum’s objectives. We know these can be tricky to evidence, so we’ve included an example task for each concept, as well as ideas to support slower-graspers and depth tasks to challenge higher-attaining pupils.

Talk Tasks are a brilliant way of enabling pupils to develop their mathematical language, thinking, understanding and confidence.

This activity explores the concept of weight and length

• Talk tasks are best completed in mixed attainment pairs, with pupils taking turns to listen and construct arguments
• Emphasis is on discussion rather than the solution, encouraging pupils to use key language and talk in full sentences
• Ask pupils to prove their answers in a variety of ways, using the CPA approach to support mathematical understanding and number sense

A animated PowerPoint to use as an introduction to weighing. There are opportunities to discuss various non-standard measures of weight, the importance of consistency and the mathematical language used to describe differences in weight. The PowerPoint also highlights the fact that the biggest things aren't always the heaviest :-)

#### Find the mass/ weight

A sheet to introduce children to weighing with grams. It has objects on for the children to weigh, and then children must order the objects from heaviest to lightest.

#### weight / mass worksheet

Student is required to measure the mass of objects using a balance scale. They will need base 10 materials and counters. Objects named and informal units used can be changed to suit your available resources. Students are also asked to write a written response to record their findings and confirm their learning.
