Introduction to weight (or mass)

In this chapter, pupils meet the concept of weight (or mass) as a measurement. They use the terms “weight” and “mass” interchangeably.

Once again, pupils are introduced to the concept through real-life, relatable examples and should be encouraged to handle different objects to get a feel for and an understanding of what is meant by weight (or mass).

Pupils will compare, describe and solve practical problems for weight (or mass). They use language such as “heavy”, “light”, “heavier than” and “lighter than” and make statements such as, “The tennis ball is heavier than the feather”.

Additionally, pupils measure and record weight (or mass) using both non-standard and standard measuring equipment. For example, they use balance scales to determine the weight of an object in cubes.

Reasoning - Problem Solving - Number (KS1) & Fractions and Percentages (KS2) - March 15th

There are two problems for KS1 and three for KS2.

In KS1 children have to work out what prizes can be claimed for a certain number of tokens. They then have to use reasoning to work out the value of a particular object.

At KS2 children solve problems using fractions and percentages. Q3 requires a little more thought and children may benefit from using a bar model or other diagram to help them solve it.

Mathematical discussion is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

Talk Tasks are a brilliant way of enabling pupils to develop their mathematical language, thinking, understanding and confidence.

This activity explores the concept of weight and length

• Talk tasks are best completed in mixed attainment pairs, with pupils taking turns to listen and construct arguments
• Emphasis is on discussion rather than the solution, encouraging pupils to use key language and talk in full sentences
• Ask pupils to prove their answers in a variety of ways, using the CPA approach to support mathematical understanding and number sense

A sheet to introduce children to weighing with grams. It has objects on for the children to weigh, and then children must order the objects from heaviest to lightest.
