In this chapter, pupils learn the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Pupils represent the 2, 5 and 10 times tables in a variety of ways, including through the use of equal grouping, arrays and number lines. They skip-count in 2s and 5s from 0. They also start to do this with 3s in connection with finding a third of an amount. Pupils count forwards and backwards in 10s from any number and connect this with their knowledge of place value.

To ensure confident recall, pupils practise these tables regularly. They develop an understanding of the meaning of multiplication and division, using structures such as repeated addition and stretching for multiplication.

Once their understanding is secure, pupils use times tables facts to derive a variety of other multiplication and division facts. They use language such as “multiply”, “times” and “product” to communicate them.

#### Reasoning - Problem Solving - Number Problems - March 21st

Today's problems are all based around the four rules and some fractions work. There are two problems for KS1 and two for KS2.

In KS1 problem children have to work out a possible question that could be asked given the information. They then have to use times tables knowledge to work out the cost of some expensive ribbon.

At KS2 children have to solve problems involving offers on chocolates and then work out how much profit is made from selling oranges.

#### Line Plots and Data Measurement Differentiated Activities

Each full-page card includes a data set presented in a line plot with 4 questions for students to answer. These questions require students to interpret and compare the data. Each card also contains a QR code for self-checking. Recording sheets and answer keys are included as an alternate.

There are 15 line plot cards divided into three sets:

Set 1: Categorical Data
Set 2: Numerical Data: Whole Numbers
Set 3: Numerical Data: Fractions

These sets provide differentiated practice and increasing difficulty.

Mathematical discussion is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

Talk Tasks are a brilliant way of enabling pupils to develop their mathematical language, thinking, understanding and confidence.

This activity explores the concept of 2,5 and 10.

• Talk tasks are best completed in mixed attainment pairs, with pupils taking turns to listen and construct arguments
• Emphasis is on discussion rather than the solution, encouraging pupils to use key language and talk in full sentences
• Ask pupils to prove their answers in a variety of ways, using the CPA approach to support mathematical understanding and number sense

#### 2,5 and 10

Deepening pupils’ understanding of key mathematical ideas is a core element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

Our Key Constructs highlight the essential mathematical concepts all pupils are expected to grasp within each year group, with accompanying guidance for assessing pupil progress.

Our Key Constructs are closely aligned to the National Curriculum’s objectives. We know these can be tricky to evidence, so we’ve included an example task for each concept, as well as ideas to support slower-graspers and depth tasks to challenge higher-attaining pupils.

#### Race around the clock times tables

A worksheet that can be used to test times tables. The children write whatever times table they are doing (4x, 8x etc) in the star in the middle of the sheet and times the number on the outside of the track by that number. They then write the answers of the times table in the boxes in the inside of the track. Lower ability children can be asked to +2, +4 etc to the number on the outside of the track instead of completing times tables. Give children 2 or 3 minutes to complete the race. Photocopy back to back and ask higher ability children to complete both sides. I made this worksheet during a teaching practice with Year 3 - it works well.

#### Counting in 2's

Fairly simple worksheet but it might save somebody a bit of time. Children count the pairs of objects (socks, gloves etc) and find out how many there are altogether.

#### Counting in fives 5's skip counting

Practise in skip counting in fives (5's) which can be used as a sheet in class or a home learning activity. Children are given the opportunity to count values grouped in fives. Children are also given a number line (5, 10, 15 to 100) and have to fill in the missing numbers. Encourage children to count and say the sequence out each time. LI: We are learning how to skip count in 5&'s. SC: I can count in groups of 5&';s to count a group of objects. I can skip count in 5's from memory. Addition flash cards for practise in counting.

#### Times Tables Homework Grids

For children to use at home, to learn their multiplication tables from 2 to 12. Homework Grids: The first sheet can be used as either an initial assessment sheet or a timed game for those who are more able. The final sheet is for children to choose their own tables to practise on a smaller scale. Challenge Grids: An extension, to practise times tables out of order, once children are confident with them in order.
