Addition and subtraction within 100

  • Year group: Year 2
  • Term: Autumn
  • Topic: Addition and subtraction
  • Duration: 2 weeks
  • Keystage: KS1
  • Age Range: 5 to 6 yrs
  • Unit can be taught out of sequence: N
  • Week Range: 5 - 6

In this chapter, pupils extend their understanding of addition and subtraction by working with numbers within 100.

As in previous chapters, it is important that pupils represent addition and subtraction problems using concrete and pictorial representations.

Pupils continue to read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction (-) and the equals sign (=). They represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts, while building on their previous knowledge of adding and subtracting one and two-digit numbers (including 0), within 100.

At this stage, pupils do not use formal methods without concrete or pictorial representation. They continue to use representations to explore the concepts of addition and subtraction, to see the connection between the two and to write down the related calculations. They also use them to solve simple one-step and missing number problems, which involve using numbers of increasing size.

Reasoning - Problem Solving - Number Problems Galore - March 16th

Here are today's questions. There are two problems for KS1 and two for KS2.

In KS1 problem children have to find missing numbers in an addition pyramid and see if they can reason to find a missing number in a different one. They then have to solve a multi-step problem, which initially looks easier than it actually is.

At KS2 children have to be able to adding fractions and decimals together and convert between fraction and decimal. For the second question children have to adding and subtract decimals after converting to the same unit of measure.

Every day in March the White Rose Maths Hub is aiming to put out a question of the day.

Tweet us @WRMathsHub a picture of your children's answers for a chance to win a prize.

Reasoning - Problem Solving - Calculations (KS1) - March 2nd

Two problems involving reasoning with calculations. Can students work out the missing values without having to add up the values. Can they spot the connection?. Every day in March the White Rose Maths Hub is aiming to put out a question of the day in the run up to SATS.

Bar Modelling Worksheet - Comparison Model Questions

This is the second in a series of worksheet sets on Bar Modelling from the White Rose Maths Hub.

This set contains 3 worksheets.

The first introduces students to the bar model comparison diagrams and students have to find missing values. All of the questions involve addition and subtraction within 100. The worksheet also gets students to see the link between words in a question and then how this is represented in the diagrams.

The second worksheet uses the bar model to solve word questions. The first few questions ask students to complete the diagrams and in later ones students then have to draw their own.

The final worksheet is a series of more challenging questions that should make students think. Many of the problems are multi-step. For each question students should use a bar model to solve. Question 2 on this sheet shows a slight adaptation of the comparison model. These will be explored in more detail in a later set.

All sheets are addition and subtraction within 100. This worksheet can be used with students in primary and secondary to get them used to the bar model comparison diagrams. All the answers are supplied also.

If you have any comments about the sheets please do not hesitate to get in touch with our Hub. It is only with your comments that we can improve what we do.

Addition and subtraction within 100

Encouraging pupils to calculate flexibly is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

This practical teaching guide helps you develop your pupils to apply their number sense when problem-solving and make connections between calculation strategies.

This guide exemplifies a teaching approach for addition and subtraction within 100

• The CPA approach should be incorporated to support pupils in making connections between calculation strategies
• Teachers can use this guidance to encourage flexible mathematical thinking

Understanding the role of the equals sign

I couldn't find any materials on this when I needed to teach my year 3 class what the equals sign REALLY meant.
I have included the lesson plan I used, the 3 differentiated worksheets and a Powerpoint I made.
Also have included a homework set of resource sheets (could alternatively be used in class as a reinforcement at a later date.)

UPDATE: I have added a more challenging resource for year 3/4

Addition - 'Boxes' game adding single digits

This game is like a game I played when I was little. Two players take it in turn to join two dots together and then gradually as the grid gets full with lines boxes can be formed. The one who completes a box gets that score and another go. The winner is the one with the largest scores at the end.

Addition - to multiples of 100

Challenge activity for more able children in my year 3 class - asks them to find sets of three numbers which add to 200 - but they cannot use the same digit twice! Great ongoing challenge for those children who seemingly find everything easy - it's more challenging than you think!
