Length and perimeter

  • Year group: Year 3
  • Term: Spring
  • Topic: Length, weight and volume
  • Duration: 3 weeks
  • Keystage: KS2
  • Age Range: 7 to 8 yrs
  • Unit can be taught out of sequence: Y
  • Week Range: 7 - 9

In this chapter, pupils add and subtract lengths and measure the perimeter of simple 2D shapes.

Pupils continue to measure and compare lengths. They now use millimetres (mm), as well as centimetres and metres, in real-life contexts and discuss the connection between them. This reinforces work on place value.

Using their existing understanding of addition and subtraction, pupils solve problems in which they add and subtract different lengths. Linked to this, they find the perimeter of simple 2D shapes by measuring the lengths of their sides.

Reasoning - Problem Solving - Number (KS1) and Fraction of an Amount (KS2) - 10th March

There are two problems for KS1 and three for KS2.

In the KS1 problems children have to use information to find the cost of particular items or length of strips of paper. Children could be encouraged to use strip diagrams or bar models to solve the problems.

At KS2 the problems involve fractions of amounts. Some of the questions are quite challenging. Again bar modelling can be used if you want to solve the majority of these problems. If you want more info on bar modelling feel free to email the Maths Hub.

Every day in March the White Rose Maths Hub is aiming to put out a question of the day.

Tweet us @WRMathsHub a picture of your children's answers for a chance to win a prize.

Mathematics Mastery

Length and perimeter

Mathematical discussion is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

Talk Tasks are a brilliant way of enabling pupils to develop their mathematical language, thinking, understanding and confidence.

This activity explores the concept of length and perimeter.

• Talk tasks are best completed in mixed attainment pairs, with pupils taking turns to listen and construct arguments
• Emphasis is on discussion rather than the solution, encouraging pupils to use key language and talk in full sentences
• Ask pupils to prove their answers in a variety of ways, using the CPA approach to support mathematical understanding and number sense

Like what you see? Mathematics Mastery is a professional development programme for teachers with a mission to transform mathematics education in the UK.

This task is just a taster of the complete classroom resources we offer. We also provide in-depth development training, online CPD, specialist support and assessment tools.

We believe all elements of our programme are vital in creating lasting change – enabling every child to enjoy and succeed in mathematics.

Reasoning and Problem Solving Questions Collection - KS1 and KS2

These booklets each contain over 40 reasoning and problem solving questions suitable for KS1, KS2 and KS3 classes. These are the questions that we have been putting out each day in March 2016 on Twitter in the run up to SATS.

The answers are provided with some simple notes at the back of the booklet and for some problems supplementary questions and variation has been provided.

As always we welcome any feedback on the work we are doing and the materials that we are releasing.
Thank you for taking an interest in our work.
