• Year group: Year 4
• Term: Autumn
• Duration: 3 weeks
• Keystage: KS2
• Age Range: 8 to 9 yrs
• Unit can be taught out of sequence: N
• Week Range: 5 - 7

In this chapter, pupils use estimation and inverse operations to check answers to calculations.

Building on learning from the relevant place value chapter, pupils consolidate their recognition of four-digit numbers (ie, in thousands, hundreds, tens and ones), as well as the connection between concrete, pictorial and formal methods. Accordingly, pupils add and subtract numbers with up to four-digits using formal written methods, such as columnar addition and subtraction, where appropriate.

Pupils solve increasingly complex problems with more than one step. Many of the problems are set in authentic, real-life contexts and require pupils to use representations (eg, bar modelling) to decide which operations and methods to use. They should be able to explain why they chose a particular method.

## Resources for this topic

### Mathematics Mastery

Select ‘View more’ for an accompanying video.

Enabling teachers to continuously develop their practice is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery Programme.

This CPD video provides step-by-step guidance on four-digit addition and subtraction.

Our videos aim to:

• Model teaching tips, techniques and clarify how to make connections between concrete, pictorial and abstract representations
• Support the teaching of different methods and concepts, rather than focusing on one method only
• Enhance subject knowledge and support non-specialists

#### column addition Year 4~ Check Ben's work!

Be the teacher and mark Ben's homework using column addition. Show how you would do it, then work out how many he will get right.

#### Deliberate column subtraction mistakes

A worksheet with a set of 8 column subtraction calculations, each with a different deliberate mistake (all except number 5, which is correct).

I searched the internet for something like this and couldn't find one. So I had to make it.

It's a PDF, I'm afraid, since it was easier for me to write them out by hand than work out how to do it on a computer.

Also I didn't do an answer sheet. But then you're maths teachers, so I'm sure you'll manage to work them out !

#### Four digit Addition Math Station

This 30 problem adding puzzle is ideal for engaging math center work, with problems that are all four digit plus four digit, some with regrouping.

This puzzle can be used by small groups, partners, or individual students. Also works great for those fast finishers! The individual triangles form a self checking hexagon shape once all the problems are solved. You could also use the included interactive notebook page as a summative or formative assessment.

I always get a cheer when these come out, definite class favorites!
