## Perimeter of simple shapes

• Year group: Year 4
• Term: Autumn
• Topic: Length, weight and volume
• Duration: 0.5 weeks
• Keystage: KS2
• Age Range: 8 to 9 yrs
• Unit can be taught out of sequence: Y
• Week Range: 8a

In this chapter, pupils measure and calculate the perimeter of rectilinear shapes.

Building on their earlier work on perimeter, pupils measure and calculate the perimeter of rectilinear shapes in both centimetres and metres.

When calculating the perimeter, they may be presented with shapes including given measurements on all sides, or of particular sides only.

### White Rose Maths

#### Reasoning - Problem Solving - Perimeter Problems (KS2) - March 2nd

Two problems involving the perimeter of squares, equilaterals and rectangles. Every day in March the White Rose Maths Hub is aiming to put out a question of the day.

Tweet us @WRMathsHub a picture of your children's answers for a chance to win a prize.

### Mathematics Mastery

#### Perimeter of simple shapes

Deepening pupils’ understanding of key mathematical ideas is a core element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

Our Key Constructs highlight the essential mathematical concepts all pupils are expected to grasp within each year group, with accompanying guidance for assessing pupil progress.

Our Key Constructs are closely aligned to the National Curriculum’s objectives. We know these can be tricky to evidence, so we’ve included an example task for each concept, as well as ideas to support slower-graspers and depth tasks to challenge higher-attaining pupils.

• Pupils should work through the tasks independently
• Teachers should incorporate the CPA approach to support pupils’ learning
• Opportunities for depth and scaffolding are built into each task

Mathematics Mastery is a professional development programme for teachers with a mission to transform mathematics education in the UK.

This task is just a taster of the complete classroom resources we offer. We also provide in-depth development training, online CPD, specialist support and assessment tools.

We believe all elements of our programme are vital in creating lasting change – enabling every child to enjoy and succeed in mathematics.

#### Perimeter of simple shapes

Enabling pupils to develop their mathematical reasoning skills through independent work is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

This activity explores the concept of perimeters of simple shapes

• Pupils should complete these tasks using concrete manipulatives as part of the CPA approach
• Pupils should be encouraged to explain their working in full sentences
• These tasks may be adapted with pupils working in pairs to encourage mathematical discussion

### Resources shared by teachers

#### Year 4 - Measurement - Week 8 - Length and Perimeter

This is pack covers Year 4: Measurement: Length and Perimeter. It covers the small steps Kilometres, Perimeter on a Grid, Perimeter of a Rectangle and Perimeter of Rectilinear Shapes.
The resources aim to help children gain a deeper understanding of the concepts covered during the week. Measures are converted from kilometres to metres and metres to kilometres. Children are also required to think about perimeter in multiple ways.

The resources include pictorial and abstract representations as well as reasoning and problem solving activities and more open ended problems to support and extend your whole class.

I hope you find them useful.

#### Maths Primary: Measuring/Shapes 'Straws 2'

Straws contains 10 activities to develop thinking skills and facts for shape at KS1, KS2 and KS3. Straws 2 adds another 4 activities, to include symmetry, perimeter and nets. Simple ideas and a great range of activities lead to real exploration of properties of 2-D shapes, and more.

#### Perimeter Lesson Plan

Two part lesson on perimeter for a low ability year 9 group. They really found Perry Perimeter engaging and were given time during starter of lesson 2 to create their own cut out of Perry to help them find the perimeter. Lesson ends on a game of Snakes and Ladders (in my other shared resources) which encouraged them to practice their skills as they have low attention spans.

#### Theme Park, Maths Enterprise

This is a group of resources I made (I used some ideas from other places, but I made the things myself) in order to use as many Maths related exercises with the final aim of creating their own theme park. Some of the skills covered are:
Shapes, co-ordinates, symmetry, speed, line graphs, pictograms, bar graphs, perimeter, area, percentages, tally, problem solving, survey, money, budget and time.

Enjoy!!

#### Maths Area & Perimeter of rectangles starter

Work out the Area and perimeter of a number of rectangles and then put them in order. Students should notice that large areas do not necessarily mean larger perimeters

#### Area and Perimeter

This is a lesson I taught and was graded outstanding. Cards were differentiated for lower ability. I have a Y5 class but it could be used in Y4 or Y6. Hope it's of use to someone. Questions have come from various resources so thankyou.

#### Maths Functional Skills: A New Floor worksheet

Students are to work the area and perimeter of floor plans in order to work out the cost of laminate flooring.
