Multiplication of two-digit numbers and short division

• Year group: Year 5
• Term: Autumn
• Topic: Multiplication and division
• Duration: 1 weeks
• Keystage: KS2
• Age Range: 9 to 10 yrs
• Unit can be taught out of sequence: N
• Week Range: 8b - 9a

In this chapter, pupils multiply numbers with up to four digits by a one or two-digit number using formal written methods, including long multiplication for two-digit numbers. They are also introduced to short division.

Pupils use multiplication facts (times tables) to multiply whole numbers by 10, 100 and 1000. While this is primarily useful in long multiplication, these mental skills must also be practised and applied beyond this. Pupils should have numerous opportunities draw on known facts to multiply and divide numbers mentally, as well as to multiply and divide whole numbers and those involving decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000.

They begin to use formal written methods for short division and use representations, such as place value counters, to divide numbers with up to four digits by a one-digit number, and interpret remainders appropriately for the context.

Pupils solve multiplication and division problems, including those involving scaling by simple fractions and rates. For a given multiplication or division calculation, they decide on the most appropriate method, be it mentally or through the use of informal jottings or formal written methods.

White Rose Maths

Multiplying by 10 - Discover

This worksheet is aimed at Y5 and looks at the effect of multiplying by 10. The worksheet encourages place value grids. Pupils will see the effect of multiplying by 10.
Subsequent questions build on this as pupils move through the exercise. Similar concept can be used for dividing by 10, which should help pupils then generalise about multiply by 100 and 1000.

Multiplying and Dividing by 10, 100, 1000

This is a worksheet on multiplying and dividing whole numbers (and some decimals) by 10, 100, 1000. Pupils should be encouraged to use place value grids and counters to help them understand what happens.

The worksheets works through some quite basic fluency to more reasoning and problem solving questions that test a deeper understanding of the concept.

Multiplication by two-digit numbers and short division

Select ‘View more’ for an accompanying video.

Enabling teachers to continuously develop their practice is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery Programme.

This CPD video provides step-by-step guidance on multiplication by two-digit numbers and short division.

Our videos aim to:

• Model teaching tips, techniques and clarify how to make connections between concrete, pictorial and abstract representations
• Support the teaching of different methods and concepts, rather than focusing on one method only
• Enhance subject knowledge and support non-specialists
