• Unit can be taught out of sequence: N
• Week Range: 3

In this chapter, pupils continue to solve addition and subtraction problems with numbers of any size.

Problems are set in authentic, real-life contexts and involve multiple steps. They draw on pupils’ knowledge of other topics and may involve decimals.

## Resources for this topic

### White Rose Maths

Enabling teachers to continuously develop their practice is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery Programme.

This CPD video provides step-by-step guidance on addition and subtraction of numbers of any size.

Our videos aim to:

• Model teaching tips, techniques and clarify how to make connections between concrete, pictorial and abstract representations

• Support the teaching of different methods and concepts, rather than focusing on one method only
• Enhance subject knowledge and support non-specialists

#### Addition and subtraction of numbers of any size

Mathematical discussion is a key element of the Mathematics Mastery programme.

Talk Tasks are a brilliant way of enabling pupils to develop their mathematical language, thinking, understanding and confidence.

This activity explores the concept of adding and subtracting numbers of any size

• Talk tasks are best completed in mixed attainment pairs, with pupils taking turns to listen and construct arguments
• Emphasis is on discussion rather than the solution, encouraging pupils to use key language and talk in full sentences
• Ask pupils to prove their answers in a variety of ways, using the CPA approach to support mathematical understanding and number sense

#### Addition and Subtraction - Word Problems Game (designed for Year 4)

Here is a Minecraft Themed board game, for Year 4.

Designed to practice the written models of Addition and Subtraction, the problems get more complex as the children progress.

Starting with simple, 1-step addition or subtraction problems; to increasing complex two-step problems. Ideal for those working towards AREs, may be a bit too challenging for those below AREs.

Hope this helps...

#### Yr 4 Calculation : Lesson 39

Addition and subtraction to 10 000. Fourth in series of lessons.

#### Treasure Hunt - Column addition and subtraction of decimals

Print out the Powerpoint and stick the slides around the room. The students take answer sheets. solve a problem and write down the corresponding letter. The letters can be copied into a sentence that should read 'I understand decimals!'. At this point you can direct students to try problems again if incorrect. Consolidate: written addition and subtraction of decimals using the column method. Also good for learning some of the synonyms of add and subtract.
