## Long multiplication and short division

In this chapter, pupils use formal written methods to multiply and divide numbers with up to four digits by a two-digit whole number.

Pupils use the formal written method of long division and interpret remainders as appropriate to the context. They may be whole numbers, fractions or rounded.

Long multiplication and long division should be used only when mental methods or informal jottings are the least efficient options.

#### Long Multiplication Hotel Design Activity

Created and used with a LA Year 5 numeracy group, but can be easily adapted by changing the criteria and prices. Working in pairs, chn had to decide on rooms, decor and additional luxuries for their hotel. To work out the total prices they had to use their long multiplication skills they had been learning that week. Chn found this challenging, but really enjoyed it.

#### Long Multiplication Treasure Hunt

This treasure hunt is differentiated. The green cards contain 1 digit x 3 digit number multiplication. The amber cards contain 2 digit x 3 digit number multiplication. The red cards contain 2 digit x 4 digit multiplication. Pupils can start on any card, complete the question and then try to find the answer on another card.

#### Long Division Formal Method

This powerpoint presents examples of long division using a formal method. The powerpoint is animated with colour matching numbers. The examples include 3 digit divided by 2 digit numbers, as well as a 4 digit divided by a 2 digit number. The final slide shows an example of a quicker method (bus stop).
