Head of Analysis and Commissioning

Helen Amass

I commission, write and edit feature articles that cover all aspects of education policy and practice. This involves drawing on current research in fields such as cognitive psychology and neuroscience and analysing the latest data and sector trends.

I draw on my background of working in schools and continue to listen to the voices of teachers and leaders about the issues that have the biggest impact on their day-to-day work.

Across the mix of research, policy and classroom practice articles we produce, it’s hard to pick favourites but we’ve had some big set pieces that have really resonated with our audience.

We published a deep dive into whether EHCPs have really driven the SEND crisis in the past decade, an analysis into the research around how earlier puberty is impacting behaviour in primary schools, and Professor Becky Francis explained the thinking behind the recommendations of the Curriculum and Assessment Review. A topic that also always does well for us is the teaching of reading, and this piece on why phonics hasn’t won the reading wars (yet) got some great conversations started among both primary and secondary teachers.
