At times preparation of lessons places demands on time. You just need something that you can pick up and use that does not require additional input. This unit of work - well it's more like a story - should meet this need. It is a story wrapped around photographs. It is a story about Namibia - a country rarely looked at. It is a story about an environment - a desert. It is a story about a nine year old girl and her family (plus an uncle). It is a story about animal adaptation to environment. The story has elements of sadness, despair, hope, recovery and final happiness. Along the way there are glimpses of humour and understanding. There are photographs to view and consider. Allow your students into the story. You might be surprised how much they will understand and learn. If you doubt this, then you can used some or all of the summary questions to find out. This can be followed as a story at junior levels with more interpretation issues possible in lower to mid-secondary levels.

This was a great lesson. The story is very entertaining and engaging. I have used and adapted to teach about desert biomes
