
This lesson introduces students to evaluating algebraic expressions by substituting values, aligned with the AQA GCSE Maths Foundation Tier objectives and designed to be used alongside White Rose Maths, Year 10 Algebra Lesson 1.
Students will:
- Recap the meaning of variables and terms in algebra.
- Practise substituting positive and negative numbers, decimals, and fractions into algebraic expressions.
- Tackle questions carefully designed to highlight common misconceptions (e.g. order of operations, handling negatives).
- Take part in interactive activities and challenges to consolidate understanding.

- A1: Substitute numerical values into formulae and expressions, including scientific formulae.
